Is this a new exchange org, or an upgraded from 2003? I suspect that the 2003 server was not properly removed from the environment and now there are orphaned objects in AD. This may be a case where Microsoft Premier may be a good idea. What roles are installed on that server right now? what prepatory steps were taken? Can you run the best practice analyzer to get a health scan?

We are experiencing this same error in our environment when trying to add the Exchange 2007 client access role on a server. Our error message is the same as the one posted in this thread and references an old Exchange 2003 "mailbox server" that was not removed cleanly when it was removed. We've used ldp.exe to view the deleted objects and there is not an entry for the deleted server object. I believe somewhere in the Exchange configuration there is a pointer to the deleted server in the deleted ojects container but since the deleted server object is no longer there, we get this error message. Any ideas where to look for this entry in the Exchange configuration? I've been poking around using the Exchange Management Shell to try to find where this pointer is in the config. but to no avail.
